TTR - Draft
2022 Draft Analysis
JGin

You know the stereotype, when it comes to Target, there are three types of people. First, those that arrive with a defined mission, a refined shopping list, and, most importantly, a singular focus on limiting his time in-store. Second, those that arrive with an ambiguous mission and a scant semblance of needs, which result in eternal wanderings throught the aisles of red hell. Thirdly, there are those that are too apathetic to firmly spot themselves in one of those first two categories and are thus swiftly sucked up into the vortex of whichever person they find themselves near.
Fantasy drafts are not much different. You either arrive prepped, focused, and ready to assemble an Avengers-worthy array of talent, or you saunter into the room with a rankings list that has Ricky Williams in the top-10 in one hand and your third Coors Banquet tall boy in the other, quoting Tom Michaels saying, “I'm one more crazy shitshow from insanity. Can you imagine scoring three first-round picks and Bo Callahan?”
As legacy ManChild member, former Champ, and former Huevo-owner, Eric Olson famously put it, “Choices will be made Gentlemen, some will be good, and some will be bad, but choices will be made.”
Before we dive into the 2022 draft review, here are a few of my high-level draft guidelines that color how I rated your teams:
* Even more so than most years, there is lots of great WR value in the middle and late rounds.
* There’s a huge drop off at RB, get’em early, get’em often.
* The depth at QB is outta control…per usual.
* Kickers and D/STs should only be drafted in rounds 14 and 15, no exceptions, no mercy, no prisoners - henceforth referred to as “Rule 4”.
* Opportunity rules in fantasy football. Being the #1 option at your position means a lot. Not 1a and 1b, #1, top dog, big tuna.
* Mock drafts are for understanding this year’s opportunity costs, i.e.what does it cost me to take or skip this or that player at this spot in the draft.
* Penalties kill…in the NFL and the ManChild draft.
And with that, here is the 2022 0.5 Commish Draft Review in draft order.
Vonmeez4Prez - Chris
This is a strong draft, except for the violation of Rule 4, it is full of value and solid depth picks. Chris’ weakest position is TE, but I love the late Albert O pick up, dude is pure athlete. Although I wouldn’t have taken Tyreek (new team, new system, unproven QB), I understand the attraction. This might have been the best draft if not for the Tucker reach.
Like: Zeke (3), Sutton (4), CEH (7), George Pickens (11), Albert O (14), Zamir White (15)
Dislike: Tucker (9), Broncos (12)
Overall Grade: 93
Chimping Ain’t Easy - Angel
Waiting until Rd. 5 to take your second RB is a tough hill to climb, although I think Patterson was a good value. Angel stacked the deck against himself - too early on QB, little RB depth, penalty kickers, and D’Onta Foreman.
Like: Cordarelle Patterson (5), Darnell Mooney (7), Chase Claypool (12), Tyler Higbee (13)
Dislike: Mahomes (3), DeVante Parker (8), D’Onta Foreman (14), Penalty Ks (9/10)
Overall Grade: 76
Donald Kuppstaff - Zak
On the brightside, Zak (or should I say Zak’s proxy) has a nice RB stable. But the WRs are all #2s or worse on their respective teams. That coupled with the expected reach for the homer team D/ST leaves Z with some work to do.
Like: AARon Rodgers (7), Mattison (9), D. Henderson (10), Russell Gage (12)
Dislike: Keenan Allen (2)/Jaylen Waddle (4)/Hunter Renfrow (6), Rams (11)
Overall Grade: 80
Boyz II ManChild - J
This was a textbook draft, except for the D/ST blip in Rd. 11 (at least it was a double digit round). Personally, I don’t like Chubb as a fantasy starter (limited passing game use and less than dominant usage), but I understand it is tough to pass up on his raw football talent.
Like: Mike Williams (5), Dameon Pierce (8), Kadarius Toney (10), Isaiah Spiller (12)
Dislike: Nick Chubb (2), Chargers (11)
Overall Grade: 95
Champ Stamp - Kommish
The Kommish’s draft aged like fine wine, it only got better as time passed. Early missteps (Kirk and Jacobs) were covered up by later value picks (Godwin and Singletary). Of course, the Drake pick went from complete waste to possible Week 1 starter. I like the move for Lance, but would’ve backed him up with a solid option at QB2. When the dusk settled, this draft was solid, yet unremarkable.
Like: Devin Singletary (5), Trey Lance (7), Chris Godwin (8)
Dislike: Christian Kirk (6), Mike Gisecki (9), Bills (10), Kenyan Drake (11)
Overall Grade: 86
C U Next Tuesday - Alec
After Mixon, Deebo, Allen, and Waller there isn’t much top-end fantasy talent. There is, however, a lot of possible upside from handcuffs and #2/3s. It’s a high variance squad, not my favorite way to exit a draft.
Like: Darren Waller (5), Cole Kmet (12), Matt Ryan (13)
Dislike: Josh Allen (3), Penalty K (4), Gabriel Davis (6), Niners (11)
Overall Grade: 83
Butt Chuggin’ - Grue
I neither love nor hate any of Grue’s picks. Harris, Fournette, and Evans are fine, reasoned selections, just not my favorite ones. I like Moore and Penny where he got them, good value, good upside. If Grue goes the way of the Huevo, it most likely won’t be because of his draft.
Like: DJ Moore (4), Rashaad Penny (7), Hockenson (8), Hollywood Brown (9)
Dislike: Colts D (13), Daniel Carlson (14)
Overall Grade: 91
Discount Double Choke - Matt E.
I feel the same about Matt’s draft as I do about Grue’s. Although I’ll take a little more off of the final grade because I don’t like going WR in Rd. 1, even if it’s Kupp, and he broke Rule 4 a round earlier.
Like: Chase Edmonds (5), Ertz (9), Bateman (10)
Dislike: Bucs (12), McPherson (13)
Overall Grade: 89
Travis My Ass Hero - Travan
This is the Sonny Weaver Jr. draft, Travan went with their gut and took a chance. I’m giving them a good grade because their draft matches up with my list, which is not gonna match consensus. The only things I’ll say is that as much as I like Saquon for a revenge tour this year, there were still really good RBs on the board and I love ARIIs talent, but I don’t like gambling on WRs on new teams. But we all know about Travan and gambling.
Like: Etienne (3), Pitts (4), London (10), Devonta Smith (12), Fields (13)
Dislike: Allen Robinson II (5)
Overall Grade: 92
Nipsey’s Last Hustle - Corey
Chase then Williams is a fine start, but after that Corey’s draft is relatively vanilla. I don’t like Thielen as a WR2, but ARSB and Amari were good values as WR3 and 4. The RB room is light even with a good Javonte season, and disasterous if it is more split time with Melvin. Are Carr and Stafford going to be 2-3 rounds better than Cousins, Fields, and Ryan? We shall see.
Like: Amon-Ra St. Brown (6), Amari Cooper (9)
Dislike: Thielen (3), Matt Gay (12), Ravens (13)
Overall Grade: 81
The Pepsi Boyz - The Pepsi Boyz
This is a good squad, and would be a great squad if not for the glaring hole at RB2. Breece Hall, Tony Pollard, James Cook, and Gus Edwards all need something to happen to another player in order to get mid-level RB2 usage.
Like: Pollard (7), Cook (9), Gus the Bus (15)
Dislike: Breece Hall (4), Dawson Knox (8), Packers (12), Lutz (14)
Overall Grade: 84
Jameson Coma - Jeff
I like my draft, especially given this wasn’t my favorite position. I was shocked both Jones and Kamara fell to me, but that came at the cost of Saquon. My least favorite pick was Dobbins, but he was the last RB in my second RB tier. My wait on WR strategy is risky, but I am relying on the depth of the position. You heard it here, the Eagles D/ST is gonna be top-3 in fantasy scoring through the first 4 weeks of the season.
Like: Kamara (1), Mostert (15)
Dislike: Dobbins (4)
Overall Grade: 87
The wait is almost over…here come’s Week 1!
